Thought out and foolproof. I was fortunate to work with Albert Whitlock, Bill Taylor, and Syd Dutton at Illusion Arts, where the age-old tradition of latent image matte paintings was still practiced well into the last decade of the twentieth century. What follows is a step-by-step outline of how this brilliant system was utilized by Illusion Arts. 3: Another popular use for double exposure is to create a gun flash atop nonfunctional firearms. The main trick is to shoot the plate with a sudden burst of off-screen interactive light.

You can see this effect if you place a pointer on top of a normal mirror. A front surface mirror, on the other hand, has the silver coating on the surface of the glass. This makes for a very delicate mirror, but it effectively eliminates the secondary reflection. If you place a pointer against a front surface mirror it will touch its reflection. In many cases Schufftan would place a front surface mirror close to the camera lens and scrape away the silver coating to create a window “through” the mirror.

The method has its roots in the well-known “Pepper's ghost” theatrical stage effect, which involved using a large sheet of glass to reflect a whitedraped “ghost” positioned in front of black so that the reflection of the white “ghost” superimposed over the scene witnessed through the glass created a spirit effect. The stage effect was popularized by John Pepper and Henry Dircks in the 19th century and can be experienced at Disney's “Haunted Mansion” ride at Disneyland. Schufftan went beyond this simple trick and made use of partially silvered mirrors and opaque mirrors with sections of the reflective coating scraped away to create composites.
